Hello again friends! Today is Corona Virus Quarantine Day 3,333.3, am I right?
Anyway, I may be a little early up stream on this one… but I’m going to bravely boast on behalf of everyone currently staying at home to help #stopthespread. Why?
Because I sincerely think that we ALL deserve a round of applause as we head into our second month showing kindness and consideration for one another, staying home, and social distancing. Don’t get me wrong, our frontline/healthcare heroes definitely deserve the standing ovation!
But let’s face it, whether you’re shut-in solo or quaran-teaming as a fam, chances are you’ve got a case of spring fever.
Even though spring looks a lot different this year and summer may seem like only a dream, I’ve got a special spot for a Cape Cod escape that’s perfect for anyone that dares to dream of sunshine, salty air, and seaside serenity!
Ready for an adventure you can actually plan AND experience during the Covid crisis?!
The Cape Cod Canal
It’s no secret that a daily dose of the great outdoors invigorates our mind, body and soul, creating a mermaid mindset to slay the day. To be honest, I have no shame admitting that one of the only reasons I’m still sane is because I try my best to go for a run outside to combat my Corona related anxiety. Mother Nature always helps to heal me and keep me emotionally grounded.
That’s why the Cape Cod Canal is currently one of my favorite seaside spots to get my sweat on.
It’s a safe, family and pet friendly, free and fun experience, that also checks off all the social distancing guidelines AND is still open to the public!
In A Seashell: It’s about a 7-mile-long man-made waterway that traverses the narrow neck of land joining Cape Cod to the mainland, and people wander along the concrete coastal paradise paths known to locals as "the canal". It's truly a sight to sea! Besides, what’s a better medicine than fresh ocean air during a global pandemic?
Local Love: Check out the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce to learn more about the canal history. Be sure to take advantage of their outreach initiatives and stay- updated on free educational, online videos for kids during the Covid-19 crisis!
Like so many fellow native mermaids I was lucky enough to spend my summers on Cape Cod and the surrounding islands. As a little mermaid, I mostly rode my bike and (tried) to rollerblade the paved paths of the coveted canal. Now that I’m much “wiser” it’s my go-to destination for some outdoor fitness fun.
Even though I prefer to run a few miles, you can opt for a scenic stroll, bike ride, rollerblade, and (as long as you’ve got your saltwater license) you can even fish for some of the most abundant striped bass in the world!
#FollowMyFins: My Spring Sweat Session
I usually start my journey in Bourne at the scenic Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge entrance for killer views of the Sagamore Bridge.
If I'm in beast mode, then I try to run or jog as far as possible; at least three to five miles.
Sometimes, I'll even push myself to run up and down the steps along the way to get my heart rate up. Just keep in mind the fact that you still have to turn right around and travel back, if you're parked in the lot anyway.
OK, I’ll admit that I don’t always get my sweat on though; it really just depends on my mood.
Any time spent in nature makes me feel refreshed, so take it from this wandering mermaid, the Cape Cod Canal feels like a personal slice of coastal paradise...even if you opt to sit, chill, and take in the sights and sounds from one of the benches you'll see along the way.
(Another Friendly Reminder: Let's not forget to follow proper social distancing guidelines!)
Little travel tip to save for when we’re back to living our lives: Be sure to bring your cell phone (or fancy DSLR camera) to snap shots of the most spectacular sunrise and sunsets that will score you serious "likes" on the Gram.
I’ve definitely stopped at the canal just for some stunning sungazing. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a seal or two swimming through the swirling canal currents that change direction every six hours, or maybe you'll catch the train bridge drop down!
Some of my most memorable moments though?
When I have my teenage son in tow and we hop on our bikes and ride off like we’re exploring an uncharted vacation destination. Parents, you'll make lasting memories and maybe even score a homeschool lesson out of this awesome adventure.
I hope you'll consider the Cape Cod Canal a spot to visit for a salty, seaside “social distancing” outdoor adventure/sweat session! (Ok fine--or a shameless spot to eat your ice cream)
